Statement of the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms Nathalie Ndongo-Seh, on the International Day of Peace 2020.
Today, the 21st of September, is the International Day of Peace; an important day observed each year around the world. The UN General Assembly declared this day to strengthen the ideals of peace, by observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.
This year, 2020, has taught us that it is not people who are our enemy but global threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic. It is only by standing in solidarity with one another that the world will win the battle against COVID-19.
In March, the UN Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, called for the laying down of weapons during the global pandemic. Although this call is aimed at armed parties, peace across borders, sectors and generations is crucial in our war against the coronavirus.
The Kingdom of Eswatini is known as a peaceful nation which promotes dialogue within communities. It is these values which we must endeavour to protect and ensure for the generations to come; not only pursuing peace but valuing the voices of all Emaswati in order to create a better future for all.
Your voice in this pursuit of peace and unity is more important than ever before. This year’s theme for the International Day of Peace is “Shaping Peace Together;” a day dedicated to sharing dialogue and collecting ideas. The United Nations invites you to share your thoughts to overcome this difficult period around the world and create a prosperous future for all. Peace starts with you and me; let’s join hands in celebrating this Peace Day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope.
