The UN Resident Coordinator Bids Farewell to UN AIDS Director, Mr Tim Rwabuhemba
UN Resident Coordinator, Ms Nathalie Ndongo-Seh, bids farewell to UNAIDS Director and UNCG Chair, Mr Tim Rwabuhemba, after a successful five years in Eswatini.
Today we say goodbye to Tim who, for a long period of time after Alberto’s departure and before Jeremias’ arrival, was the only male member of the UNCT in Eswatini. I trust that, as a result of that very privileged posture and Tim’s personality, he was highly regarded and treated with respect by the UN family.
It is unfortunate that, due to COVID-19, we are unable to organize a proper send-off for “Babe Tim”, as several of you have come to call him.
Tim has made significant contributions to UN achievements in Eswatini over the past 5 years. Through UNAIDS’ coordination, programmes and interventions and partnerships with several stakeholders in and outside Eswatini, Tim has - either directly or indirectly - influenced the lives and the behaviours of many in the country.
Under his leadership, UNAIDS contributed to Eswatini’s historical milestones of achieving the 90–90–90 HIV treatment targets and surpassing the targets to achieve 95– 95–95 by 2030. Tim’s belief in and support to the Delivering As One UN principle will also be remembered and are evident in his responsibilities as the Chair of the UN Communications Group (UNCG).
I note in this regard that he was among the first Heads of Agency to offer a contribution to the COVID-19 social mobilization and awareness campaign conducted in areas considered as hotspots in the Hhohho and Manzini regions. I could also mention his invaluable support in the celebration of our last UN Day with the media and in a school for children with disabilities in Nlangano.
At a more personal level, I do recall the orientation that Tim gave me in 2019 upon my reassignment to the majestic Kingdom of Eswatini. I have no doubt that many colleagues on this platform have benefited from his country/context knowledge, cultural sensitivity, networks, words of wisdom and guidance to overcome challenges and make progress as well as contributions within the UN family and in the country.
At this stage, and on behalf of all of us, I wish ‘Babe Tim’ the very best of peace and success in his next endeavours. As he will be missed and Rose may have large shoes to fill upon his departure, I also wish to warmly welcome her in our UN family and assure her of our full support to ensure that she enjoys a peaceful, successful and very fulfilling tour of duty in Eswatini. Thank you.
